Staff member killed during airstrikes in Paktia Province

Landscape from Paktia Afghanistan

It is with deep sadness that HealthNet TPO confirms the loss of our colleague, Sharif Khan, who was killed while responding to a mass casualty incident in Paktia Province, southeastern Afghanistan.

On the night of 28 June 2026, airstrikes in Mandakhil village, Chamkani District, caused severe civilian casualties. HealthNet TPO-supported health facilities immediately activated their emergency response. Chamkani District Hospital and Paktia Regional Hospital received large numbers of injured people requiring urgent medical care. Patients were triaged, stabilised and referred for specialised treatment where needed, while health workers continued providing care under extremely challenging circumstances.

During the emergency response, Sharif Khan, who served as a Security Guard at Chamkani District Hospital, lost his life while assisting victims. Another HealthNet TPO colleague, who works as a vaccinator at one of the supported clinics, was also injured during these events.

This tragic incident highlights the risks faced every day by health workers, first responders and other  staff serving communities affected by conflict. The incident demonstrates how quickly violence can place both civilians and frontline responders in danger.
