HealthNet TPO is tackling malnutrition in Afghanistan by improving access to essential nutrition services in Kabul and Khost provinces. Through prevention, treatment, and community empowerment, we are addressing the root causes of malnutrition and helping families rebuild healthier, more resilient lives.
Preventing and Treating Malnutrition in Kabul and Khost
Malnutrition remains one of Afghanistan’s most pressing public health challenges, with two-thirds of the population facing food insecurity and over half experiencing crisis-level hunger. Rising food prices, unemployment, and recurring natural disasters, such as droughts and floods, have exacerbated the situation, particularly in rural areas where livelihoods are most vulnerable.
HealthNet TPO, in collaboration with the World Food Programme, is addressing this crisis head-on through a multi-faceted approach focused on prevention, treatment, and sustainable solutions. By combining immediate nutritional interventions with community education and capacity-building, we aim to reduce acute malnutrition among children under five and pregnant and lactating women (PLW) in some of Afghanistan’s most affected regions.
Our Impact
Through this initiative, we are working to combat severe and moderate acute malnutrition in Kabul and Khost provinces. By empowering communities with knowledge and resources, we are equipping caregivers, community health workers, and local leaders to address the root causes of malnutrition. Over 61 health facilities are being supported to provide life-saving treatment and prevention programs, ensuring the most vulnerable populations are reached.
Our work includes distribution of Ready-to-Use Supplementary Food (RUSF) and Super Cereal to target populations. We address Moderate Acute Malnutrition (MAM) in children aged 6-59 months and Acute Malnutrition in Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women (AM-PBW). These efforts are creating healthier families and stronger communities.
