HealthNet TPO, with UNHCR, is enhancing healthcare for 95,000 refugees in Burundi. This project strengthens services in camps, provides mental health support, and improves nutrition, ensuring sustainable care for vulnerable communities.

HealthNet TPO, with support from UNHCR, is implementing a four-year project (2024–2027) to enhance healthcare and mental health services for approximately 95,000 refugees, asylum seekers, and returnees across five refugee camps in Burundi. The initiative addresses critical gaps in primary healthcare, nutrition, and mental health left by the departure of a previous NGO, aiming to strengthen the strained health infrastructure.

The project focuses on improving access to essential healthcare services by equipping and staffing medical facilities, particularly to address chronic illnesses and epidemic-prone diseases. Mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) are a key priority, offering both individual and group counseling, along with training for healthcare workers and community health volunteers. Reproductive health services are also expanded, with family planning, maternal and neonatal care, and HIV prevention at the core.

Nutritional support is provided through monthly screenings for children under five, supplementary feeding programmes, and community education on dietary practices. Monitoring and evaluation systems, supported by digital tools, ensure the project’s progress is tracked effectively, while also allowing for adaptive improvements.

This comprehensive approach aims to improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations, strengthen local health systems, and create sustainable solutions for the long-term well-being of refugees and returnees in Burundi.
