Since the de-facto authorities gained power in Afghanistan in August 2021, the humanitarian situation in the country has become even more dramatic. The toll on the health and mental health of the Afghan people, particularly women and girls, is immense and the need for assistance is surging. You can support this winter by donating to HealthNet TPO to continue to save lives – delays could mean more mothers and children dying from treatable illnesses.

As snow begins to settle on the ground in Kabul and across the country, and temperatures plunge to below freezing, families try to keep warm and fed this winter in Afghanistan. Economic collapse, rising costs of fuel and food, and unemployment are however pushing families to the brink. The UN has warned that at least 90 percent of Afghan households do not have enough food to eat.

The resilience of the Afghan people, who have lived through forty years of conflict and unrest, cannot be questioned. However, as services are cut, education is restricted, and people face desperate choices, the impact of the ongoing crisis on the health and mental health of many is immense. A lack of health services and restrictions on accessing specific services for women and girls is concerning for maternal and child health. Children under five are at serious risk of malnutrition, acute respiratory infections and other infectious disease.

Few organisations in Afghanistan have such an established position as HealthNet TPO. With almost 30 years of experience implementing programmes to improve the health and mental health of the population, the organisation is widely respected and has become one of the largest international organisations supporting health in the country. Over the past eighteen months, we have remained active, and dedicated to supporting families across the whole country.

When you can no longer rely on anything, what remains is the hope that you will not be forgotten. This winter, let us show the people of Afghanistan that we have not forgotten them.
