Celebrating Resilience in Burundi

placeholder

On October 15th, the Day of Resilience hosted discussions and debates about improving resilience in Burundi. As part of the consortium for "Twiteho Amagara", HealthNet TPO was able to present its results and ambitions for coming years.

Community Resilience

At HealthNet TPO, we believe that everyone has the inner strength to create a better future for themselves. By working with communities and generating support at an institutional level, we begin to restore trust within communities and build their resilience. When people are embedded in strong and healthy communities, they are better able to take care of themselves and those around them.

The 3 components of the Resilience measure financed by the European Union (Rural Development, Health and Energy) were present during this day.

Day of Resilience

On October 15th 2021, we celebrated the Day of Resilience in Bujumbura , Burundi where over 200 people attended, including ministers, representatives, governors, doctors and members of the EU-funded Resilience programme. Organised by the European Union, the event highlighted the progress of three ‘resilience’ components of the programme implemented across the country, including Twiteho Amagara for health, Tubeho Neza for rural development and Umuci W’iterambere for energy development.

As the lead partner in the cosortia of Twiteho Amagara – which means ‘Let’s Take Care of Our Health’, HealthNet TPO held a stand to present our progress including the integration of mental health services in primary healthcare and some of the materials that have been used in youth-friendly health centres for education on sexual and reproductive health. As of May 2021, Twiteho Amagara supported more than 2 million people in the provinces Cibitoke, Ngozi and Kayanza.

Throughout the day, various discussions and debates were held surrounding the sustainability and interconnection of the three components. The afternoon session was an opportunity for an exchange between five panellists, including Mr Antonio Campone the  chief of cooperation of the European Union Delegation of Burundi. Concerning Twiteho Amagara, he noticed the challenges and opportunities of improving the quality of care in Burundi.

“The EU wants to work more closely with authorities at both a central and local level in implementing its resilience interventions.” Said Mr Antonio Campone, Chief of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation of Burundi. “The concept of resilience - the ability to adapt to a hostile environment – is important but it must be accompanied by joint efforts to make the environment less hostile, hence the importance of policy dialogue around the necessary reforms in health, education and social protection”, he added.

Twiteho Amagara

In Burundi, HealthNet TPO leads a programme called Twiteho Amagara, which means 'Let's Take Care of our Health'. We work with our partners to strengthen the resilience of the Burundian population and to strengthen the healthcare system. The project increases access to quality health services for all, including sexual and reproductive health, mental health services, nutritional services for mothers and children, reproductive health, and prevention of gender-based violence, targeting youth, adolescents and women.
